When I lived in San Francisco, I tried to like the Giants. I really did. I even went to a few games at the old Candlestick Park, wearing North Face gear.

They just didn't stick.

If I had to pick a team I liked in the NL, I'd have to go with the Padres. Maybe it's because their radio station reaches pretty much the entire California coast at night, so I was able to listen to their games in Northern California before I could afford XM. Maybe it's because the only game I've ever seen at Petco turned into a classic pitchers' duel between Peavy and Clemens. Peavy even got a hit off of the (alleged) Roid-boy.

The D'backs are okay, when they don't suck like they did this year. Hey, they denied the MFYs a World Series ring in 2001. That has to count for something.

The only other team that might be a candidate would be the Reds, because they are a home team during Spring Training. But I can't go there. Too many bad memories from 1975.

Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff August 31, 2010 03:49 PM
Growing up in Hyde Park and starring at West Roxbury High School, Manny Delcarmen grew up dreaming of pitching for the Red Sox.
For nearly six full seasons, the righthander lived his dream, even contributing as a key setup man to the 2007 World Series champions. But his run with the Sox came to an abrupt end this afternoon when he was dealt to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Single A righthander Chris Balcom-Miller

The 28-year-old Delcarmen, a hard-thrower who has mixed periods of dominance with maddening stretches of inconsistency, went 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 48 relief appearances this season.
A second-round selection by Boston in the 2000 draft, he ranks fourth in club history with 289 relief appearances, compiling a 11-6 record with a 3.89 ERA and 243 strikeouts.

Balcom-Miller, 21, is 6-7 with a 3.31 ERA with 117 strikeouts and 19 walks in 108 innings for the Rockies Single A Asheville affiliate.
In 2009 Balcom-Miller was named Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year after posting a 4-0 record with a 1.58 ERA in 57 innings.
Projected as a future middle-of-the-rotation starter, he was rated the 16th-best prospect in the Rockies organization by Baseball America entering the season.
